Are network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) still relevant? With the emphasis shifting to network intrusion protection in the last two years, this technology looks like it is on its last legs. But is it?
There are other well-documented problems: the inability to detect common encrypted traffic, such as the payload of an SSL transaction; and covert reconnaissance-very slow reconnaissance probing. IPv6 can also trip up NIDS and NIPS.
