We are, supposedly, running out of IP addresses. This is due to the fact that IP addresses in IPv4 use only 32 bits, and large chunks of addresses were handed out in the early days of the internet to institutions such as MIT, who have never used all of them and probably never will.
This document collects some thoughts on the tendency to totally rewrite Version 2.0 of successful software (and standards) just because the first version is perceived to be "messy" and "unmaintainable".

It includes an example with IPv4-IPv6.
