Internet engineers are working on what would be the biggest, the most drastic, and the most comprehensive change to the underlying structure of the Internet in 20 years. The switchover to Internet Protocol, version 6--or IPv6--will be a massive undertaking that will require the reconfiguration of more than 100 million computers.
It will make possible trillions upon trillions of Internet addresses for every human on the planet. Unfortunately, writes columnist Simson Garfinkel, the IPv6 network will probably be slower and less secure than the one we have now.
