The IPv6 Observatory, the GEN6 project and the European Commission are jointly organizing an IPv6@Gov Workshop dedicated to the policy dialogue on the IPv6 deployment in European Union Member States.
IPv6 is a cornerstone of the Future Internet. To ensure both business continuity of the European industry and society to get benefits from IPv6 added technologies, the European Commission (EC) requested that by 2010, 25% of the users should be able to connect to IPv6. This ambitious target has not been achieved and while IPv4 pool of addresses dried out in February 2011, the estimated and effective level of IPv6 deployment is still below 5%. Pointing out the emergency of the issue, the European Commission is continuing its support to IPv6 deployment through its digital agenda and calling the member states to foster IPv6 adoption.
Complete info, agenda and registration at the IPv6 Observatory site.

OECD member states throw their weight behind IPv6

Representatives of 42 member states in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) issued a declaration in which they expressed their support for the next-generation internet protocol.
At its Ministerial Meeting on the Future of the Internet Economy, held in Seoul, Korea, on Wednesday, the organisation said the switch to the new version of IP was necessary to connect billions of people to the internet. IPv4 addresses are quickly running out, so the signatories want to have the new version of the internet protocol, IPv6, adopted quickly. In one of the items in the declaration that is more political than technical, they call on governments and private companies that use a large number of IPv4 addresses to lead the switch over.
Complete info at Heise online.

More than 100 technical experts from English-speaking countries in Africa have gathered in Nairobi for IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) training. The training is geared toward improving the capacity of IT managers in Africa in deployment of IPv6 networks.
Kenya will embark on a plan to deploy IPv6 mainly through the national Network Operations Center (NOC) that is currently being setup, said Information and Communication Minister Samuel Poghisio in his keynote address. He added that NOC will support ongoing initiatives to encourage IPv6 deployment.
Complete info at CIO, NetworkWorld and ComputerWorld.

An unlimited source of Internet addresses to be on stream in Europe by 2010

Increasing demand for Internet based services means that there would not be enough addresses to support this expected growth, if no action is taken. Encouraging internet users and providers to adopt the latest Internet Protocol (IP version 6 or IPv6) will provide a massive increase in address space, much in the same way as telephone numbers were lengthened in the 20th century.
Complete info at Europa web site, in all the official languages.

EU Calls for Mass Migration to IPv6 by 2010

The European Commission has set a target of getting at least a quarter of EU industry, public authorities and households to switch to IPv6 internet addressing by 2010. A recent report from the OECD had warned that the shortage of older IPv4 internet addressing threatened the rise of mobile internet services.
"This is very much a case of a stitch in time saves nine", said Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media. "In the short term, businesses and public authorities might be tempted to try to squeeze their needs into the strait jacket of the old system, but this would mean Europe is badly placed to take advantage of the latest internet technology, and could face a crisis when the old system runs out of addresses."
Complete info at Cellular News, 7th Space and CRN.

Gov'ts must intervene to end IP address shortage, says OECD

Businesses alone are not doing enough to avert an impending shortage of Internet Protocol addresses, and governments must work with them to secure the future of the Internet economy, according to a report published Thursday by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The number of IP addresses, needed for Web sites, servers and PCs to communicate with one another over the Internet, is limited, and almost 85 percent of addresses are now in use. At the current rate of growth, the pool of available addresses will be exhausted by 2011.
Complete info at NetworkWorld, PCWorld and ComputerWorld.

During RIPE 55 in Amsterdam, the RIPE community agreed to issue the following statement on IPv4 depletion and the deployment of IPv6.
"Growth and innovation on the Internet depends on the continued availability of IP address space. The remaining pool of unallocated IPv4 address space is likely to be fully allocated within two to four years. IPv6 provides the necessary address space for future growth.
The Choice: IPv4 Exhaustion or Transition to IPv6

The exhaustion of the remaining pool of unallocated IPv4 addresses is approaching within the next few years and this may create some problems for the Internet, unless we make some smart choices. These decisions need to be planned well in advance if we want to ensure that the changes are as trouble-free, painless and inexpensive as possible.
This paper analyze the situation and classifies the potential mitigations for the IPv4 exhaustion problem into two basic categories: Temporary and Permanent mitigations.
The paper can be <a href="http://www.ipv6tf.org/pdf/the_choice_ipv4_exhaustion_or_transition_to_ipv6_v

ARIN Board Advises Internet Community on Migration to IPv6

On 7 May 2007, the ARIN Board of Trustees passed a resolution advising the Internet technical community that migration to a new version of the Internet Protocol, IPv6, will be necessary to allow continued growth of the Internet.
Internet Protocol defines how computers communicate over a network. IP version 4 (IPv4), the currently prevalent version, contains just over four billion unique IP addresses, which is not enough to last indefinitely. IPv6 is a replacement for IPv4, offering far more IP addresses and enhanced security features. To date, ARIN has performed technical coordination of both versions and has not advocated one over the other.
Complete info at EarthTimes, PR Newswire and PR-Inside.

The Federal CIO Council has come up with some useful definitions to help take some of the guesswork out of the mandate to move agency backbones to IPv6 by next year.
The Office of Management and Budget in 2005 directed agencies to make the move to the next generation of Internet Protocols, setting a deadline of July 2008 for making core networks IPv6 compatible. But OMB did not explain exactly what it meant. In self-defense, the CIO Council’s IPv6 Working Group defined the scope of the transition to provide agencies with a manageable task, said John W. McManus, deputy CIO at the Commerce Department and co-chairman of the working group.
Complete info at GCN and FCW.

The Defense Department has acquired a block of 247 billion IP Version 6 addresses, about equal to 25 percent of the entire IPv4 address space.
Only a tiny percentage of those addresses will be used, however. As with the North American Numbering Plan for telephone numbers, DOD officials said addresses will be assigned to networks in a hierarchical model that will leave many untouched.
Complete info at GCN.
