The Internet uses what’s called the TCP/IP protocol. The IP part of that technology, called IPv4, is running out of addresses, and the telecommunications industry is moving to a new standard, called “IPv6.” In some cases, this may require new home equipment, a new router, and possibly other consumer electronics, if you elect to upgrade.
