Australia must begin planning a transition to the next generation of internet protocol or risk jeopardising export relationships, an industry expert has warned.

The nation's first Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) Summit will take place later this month in Canberra to discuss the implications of the technology and its rollout worldwide.
